Everest's shepherds: We owe the summit to Sherpas
Everest's Sherpas are vital, with incredible genetic adaptations making them super efficient at using oxygen. Dawa 'Hillary' Sherpa survived six days on Everest without food, water, or oxygen after falling into a crevasse. Their experience has made climbing safer, halving the death rate, though 40% of Everest deaths are Sherpas.
