Why has Parliament increased the number of Supreme Court judges?

The Lok Sabha passed the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, on Monday (August 3, 2026). This law increases the sanctioned strength of the court from 34 to 38 judges. The government said the move aims at "ensuring speedy and effective justice" by tackling the growing backlog of cases.
