Is abusive language a criminal offence in India?

Multiple FIRs were registered against Cockroach Janta Party protesters at Jantar Mantar for using allegedly abusive language. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita does not criminalise abusive language as a standalone offence. Legal experts said, "Whether abusive speech amounts to a crime depends on its nature, context and consequences" for the accused.
